Hello again, Hybrids!
In today’s newsletter, I’ll share why writing online and sharing your perspective is the #1 Hybrid Skill you can develop, no matter what your professional identities are.
(Today’s issue takes ~3 minutes to read)
Being a Hybrid Professional is all about operating effectively at the intersection of your professional identities.
Every profession requires a different set of skills, training, and education. It's often hard to locate the intersection between seemingly unrelated identities, which is when most people give up.
But there's one hybrid skill that lives at the intersection of ALL professional identities...writing online.
Do you have a unique point of view about something interesting? (Spoiler: Yes, you do)
So why not build out a library of content online, sharing your unique perspective?
Writing on the internet has countless benefits:
Refine communication & storytelling skills
Validate ideas (what works and what doesn't?) with real-time feedback
Build credibility within your areas of interest
Expand your network
Clarify your thoughts
Here’s what writing online has done for me (so far):
After fiddling around with a bunch of half-written drafts for over 2 years, I finally started writing online on March 7th, 2022. In that time, I have:
Published 80+ Atomic Essays (~250 words each) on Twitter, LinkedIn & Medium
Written 20+ Twitter Threads (1 thread every other week)
Tweeted every single day for 325 days
Gained 800+ followers between Twitter, LinkedIn & Medium
Started this weekly newsletter in December 2022 (you’re reading issue #7 right now!)
Now, these are not eye-popping numbers but let me share some of the beneath-the-surface results:
Created three new, albeit modest, income streams (coaching, writing & affiliate marketing)
Had 25+ one-on-one calls with new professionals within my space (real estate)
These new income streams allow me to re-invest in no-code tools, updated branding, & a virtual assistant.
Those tools & resources then allow me to compound the results from my earlier writing to develop additional points of view.
The cycle never stops unless I stop.
What does this have to do with real estate?
As with most industries, real estate is network-driven.
Those 25 one-on-one calls were a result of engagement with my writing (or, in other cases, my commenting on other people’s writing).
The types of people I’ve connected with:
Real estate agents
Lenders (conventional, hard money, private)
Syndicators & deal sponsors
LPs
Property managers
Other real estate investors
The reason these people were willing to talk to me was that they saw me express my point of view online & saw an opportunity to exchange value.
They grew to know me as a real estate investor because I wrote (publicly) about my experience investing in real estate.
If you don’t tell people, they’ll never know.
So, where do you start?
For me, the answer was Twitter. There is a vibrant community of real estate investors on Twitter, and the information is free!
Medium & LinkedIn are also popular, and there is a lot of opportunity for engagement.
If you’re not ready to hit publish on your own content, you can start by simply commenting and engaging with other people’s content. You’d be surprised how many people will answer or respond back.
Next thing you know, you’ll be building a network and participating in the online discourse with a community of your peers.
You have everything to gain and very little to lose.
